Son: I attended UC Irvine and since my house was 14 miles away, I opted to commute to school during those four years. Traffic wasnt so bad as long as classes were scheduled between 10am and 3pm. Therefore, this was something to consider if you commute. Light traffic would result in a 20-minute commute whereas it could potentially take 50 minutes during rush hour. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Son: The guidance counselor and Career Center played a huge role in helping me with my graduate school application. Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Son: Most libraries on campus are open to all students (aside from the few that are specifically reserved for graduate students). Son: UC Irvine is located in a very urban setting that is surrounded by many shopping centers and pubs/restaurants for students to relax and socialize during their downtime. The Irvine Spectrum and South Coast Plaza are two great shopping centers that are great for hangouts with friends. Both are located within a 30-minute drive from campus. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Son: Being a Biology major, many of classes were in lecture halls that accommodated 400+ students. However, that isnt always the case if you are in other majors, such as English, where the typical class size ranges from 20-40 students. Students are free to run for student body positions in their respective majors. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Son: One class that I particularly loved was a neuroscience course that dealt with the anatomy and physiology of the brain and eyes. Being that I was applying for optometry, this course really caught my interest since it gave me a glimpse of what I would be studying in optometry school. The professor was very welcoming and was always there for me during office hours if I had any questions in lecture, or if I wanted to expand on any concepts presented in the lecture. I established a great relationship with that professor which helped me in receiving a letter of recommendation for my application to optometry school. Im currently in my last year in optometry school and five months away from receiving my doctorate degree. Even though Ive been away from UC Irvine for graduate school, I still keep in touch with that professor throughout the years and Im still learning from my professor since she does extensive ocular research. Veronica: Fisk University has a beautiful campus with historic buildings. The campus is in a central location, situated near public transportation and walkable areas. How available are the professors, academic advisors, and teaching assistants? Veronica:All of the professors I have come into contact with are attentive and available when students need anything. I have always felt that my teachers truly want to see all of their students succeed, and do what they can to ensure that. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students, etc.? Veronica:Freshman and sophomore year, dorms are separated by gender. Once you reach junior year, you can choose between a single or double occupancy room. Also, you have co-ed dorming options if you choose to live on campus. Many students do decide to find off-campus housing. The school offers dining packages to students with both cafeteria and fast food options. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Veronica:I studied English at Fisk. The university specializes in the liberal arts, science, math, and engineering. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Veronica:It was very easy to make friends at Fisk. Its a small campus and easy to get around. The school does offer Greek life to students. How helpful are the Career Center and other student support services? Veronica:How helpful the Career Center is depends on your willingness to reach out and seek advice from the helpful staff. How are the various study areas, such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Veronica:The study spaces on campus are quaint and cozy. Describe the surrounding town. Veronica:Nashville is full of nightlife, great restaurants, and a great atmosphere for college students. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Veronica:The class sizes were relatively small at Fisk. I was generally very pleased with the size of all of my classes. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Veronica:My favorite memory was in English class with Dr. Davidson. If you have beliefs that are getting in the way of your learning, consider changing them. However, before you can change a belief, you must first be unsatisfied with your current beliefs about learning. When you find yourself giving up on a task too quickly or trying to merely memorize when you need to understand and apply difficult concepts, you can reflect on your beliefs, rethink your approach, and take time to really learn the information. -Look for the big picture. Instead of memorizing a lot of separate facts, make a conscious effort to relate ideas to what you already know and to other ideas discussed in class. -Learn to live with uncertainty. It is sometimes difficult to accept that there are no right answers to some questions. -Dont compare your ability with others. Worrying that you are not as good as your roommate in math will not get you anywhere. Focus instead on how to improve your ability to learn in the subjects that you find difficult. You can find a tutor or work with or form a study group to help you learn. It may take you longer to get there, but remember that college learning is more like an endurance sport than a spring. -Realize that learning takes time. If you begin your assignments with the expectation that they will take time to fully understand and complete, you are likely to experience less frustration and more understanding. Dont expect to learn complex concepts the first time that you encounter them. Instead, plan to spread out your study time so you can review difficult material several times.
